Iggy Threadgoode: Spring ‘10 Fashion Inspiration

An Overalled Iggy Threadgoode

An Overalled Iggy Threadgoode

The other night as I was channel surfing, I happened upon one of my all time favorite movies, Fried Green Tomatoes. I have not seen this movie in quite some time, well maybe a year or so, but within five minutes of watching it I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Lead character, Iggy Threadgoode, played by Mary Stuart Masterson, looked as if she had been outfitted by Phillip Lim, Rag + Bone, or Helmut Lang! Her chic denim overalls that she wears throughout most of the movie are a bit distressed, asymmetrical, gathered at the waist with a super chic saddle leather pocket belt, a white cotton shirt layered underneath, and of course finished with a black menswear vest. I scoured the internet for the full body pic but no luck. What I wanted to point out is that her overalls are not ankle length but rolled up just below her knee – it couldn’t be any more relevant!! It is almost as if the entire fashion industry gathered together to watch this movie for inspiration last year when designing their Spring ‘10 collections. Of course this season they aren’t called overalls, but jumpsuits, jumpers, and rompers, but nonetheless they are the exact same thing. Take a look below to see our super chic tomboy, Iggy-inspired pieces that are currently  in the store and some that will be coming in later this season.  I would definitely pair each one with a menswear vest, belt, or leather jacket/vest with gladiator sandals (high or low) or moto-boots – (arriving late spring as well!).

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis//Style Icon.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis Style Icon

Jackie Kennedy Onassis: Style Icon

The heir to the effortless chic style throne is without a doubt Jackie O.  Her style was timeless, chic, and she is perhaps the most influential style icon since Marie Antoinette shook up the French throne at Versailles.  All of our style icons have had confidence, ease, and grace, which are not necessarily synonymous with specific styles of clothing.  However, they appear to be essential between looking fabulous in an outfit and  looking not quite put together properly.  Jackie O. inspired millions of women to wear bright colored dresses, sheaths, and wonderful outerwear accented with clean but rich detailing such as bows, lace, oversize buttons, and pattern.  It is difficult for a lot of women (myself included) to maintain pops of color during the fall/winter. It is so easy and chic to go more Audrey Hepburn with the head-to-toe black ensemble, but learning how to integrate color into our favorite black attire can help add dimension to any outfit during the winter and make our skin glow more!  Here are our favorite looks right now that have been inspired by our style icon Ms. Kennedy Onassis: (below) Our Marc by Marc Jacobs dress is absolutely amazing! The color is so fabulous on everyone and the bow is ever so chic!  I’ve seen this paired with a black peep toe stiletto for a very sleek and leggy look and also I LOVE it with sheer black tights and black suede stiletto boots.  Imagine with a black overcoat how amazing this look is for dinner – the green just pops from underneath and then once the jacket is off, sitting at the table, the bow frames the neckline oh so perfectly and not in an obnoxious bow sort of way!  I am definitely inspired to wear this to work over the next couple of days.  This time of year especially,  I love finding these bright  pops of color to brighten up my look!

The most stunning dress coat: Hanii Y Black Fur and Lace Detail Coat

The most stunning dress coat: Hanii Y Black Fur and Lace Detail Coat

Our favorite dress coat of this season (right) is definitely Jackie O meets Nordic-chic. Even for someone who feels that a fur coat can be overwhelming (that would be me), this coat is very easy to wear and super glamourous.  There is just the right amount of fur on the top of the coat to keep that glamour yet eliminate the usual bulk that comes along with fur.  The lace trim is a bit victorian inspired and softens the graduation from the fur to the coat’s base fabric.  What I love most about this coat is that it gives you the perfect opportunity to pair it with a great pop of color underneath – the purple Shoshanna dress underneath shows off the detailing of the coat and softens the bold color of the dress for those of us that need something to ground the boldness.  The purple dress under the fur looks very royal to me – and of course now as I write this, I see my subconscious inspiration was also of course The Tudors/ Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn time period.  I love purple and black paired together – also very rock and roll chic if edged up a bit with tights and a bootie.  This has definitely become my favorite look of the week – for those of you that will be in the store this week  – it will be on the mannequin!

ADAM by Adam Lippes Navy and Black Houndstooth Dress

We already sold out of ADAM’s navy and black houndstooth trousers not only because of their amazing fit, but also the fabric choice was so unique and rich so when this sheath dress (left) arrived in the same fabric we were ecstatic to say the least.  The fit is incredible, it is so timeless, and the perfect alternative to wearing an LBD.   For a more casual and work oriented lifestyle, Shoshanna’s purple ponte dress below is our final Jackie O. inspiration dress for today.  For those of us that love purple (me!) and might not have a more formal occasion to wear her party dress pictured under the fur coat, this ponte dress (below) is extremely versatile.  Ponte is an amazing fabric – comfortable, flattering, and versatile.  This dress can easily be worn during the day with black tights and flat boots or a ballet flat. To dress it up, pairing it the same way as the party dress (above right) is easy enough or paired with a fitted thin black turtleneck underneath and black tights is a more modern work friendly, cold weather option.

Style Icon: the ever ‘glowing’ Gwyneth Paltrow

White Jersey Dress with Black Bustier Waist

White Jersey Dress with Black Bustier Waist**

Gwyneth Paltrow’s intial success came from her acting; however in the fashion industry she is a much loved style icon and muse to many.  Her style is impeccable: balancing classic grace with modern edge and architectural lines.  She takes risks, no one can accuse her of playing it safe, but for the most part her risks end up being fabulous!  She knows how to dress for her leggy body type and it works time and time again, often showing up at premieres and appearances looking absolutely stunning.  Style icons aren’t necessarily required to be from the past – Paltrow made our list because her style has substance.

The choices, risks, and successes of her fashion are all backed by a woman of great intelligence – she has a mind and I personally really enjoy following her  GOOP Newsletter where she lets us know what she is inspired by in her life – food, travel, adventure, and fashion wise (many are calling her the new generation’s Martha Stewart, while others have been chastising her for this new endeavor – I think she is amazing!).  Her food show, On the Road Again with Mario Batali, which films the duo bouncing around Spain on culinary adventures – solidified her icon status with me.  She has this whole smart girl, laid back vibe thing going on with a passion of the new and a penchant for not caring what others think.  So today our style icon is Gwyneth.  My most early memory of a strong fashion choice of hers was the princess pink gown she wore to the Oscars when she took home the award for Best Female Actor for Shakespeare in Love. I just love where her style has evolved to – often photographed in architectural shapes and quite a bit of black and white.  A modern woman of strength, grace, intelligence, and likability.  These soon to arrive Holiday ‘09 dresses (pictured above) inspired our glowing Gwyneth day!
